Who will host the 2023 Champions League final?

The 2023 UEFA Champions League Final will be the final match of the 2022–23 UEFA Champions League, the 68th season of Europe's premier club football tournament organised by UEFA, and the 31st season since it was renamed from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League. It will be played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey in 10 June 2023.
The final was originally scheduled to be played at Wembley Stadium in London, England. However, due to the postponement and relocation of the 2020 final because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe, the scheduled hosts for subsequent finals were shifted back a year, and the Allianz Arena in Munich was assigned the 2023 final. When the 2021 final, which had been scheduled to be played in Istanbul, also had to be relocated due to COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey, the 2023 final was given to Istanbul instead; Munich will now host the 2025 final.
The winners will earn the right to play against the winners of the 2022–23 UEFA Europa League in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup.

  • Dublin and Bilbao awarded a Europa League final each after missing out on Euro 2020 games

Uefa, European soccer's governing body, has announced that Istanbul’s Ataturk Stadium will host the Champions League final in 2023.

The Turkish venue had been due to stage European club soccer’s showpiece match in 2020 and 2021 but Uefa was forced to make changes in both years due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lisbon took over as host for a final-eight ‘mini-tournament’ last year and this May’s all-English encounter between Chelsea and Manchester City was switched to Porto at short notice.

As a result of the latest change, Munich’s Allianz Arena will now host the final in 2025 rather than 2023. The 2024 final will remain at London's Wembley Stadium while next year’s encounter is due to be played in St Petersburg, Russia.

'Following the relocation of the 2021 Uefa Champions League final from Istanbul to Porto, it was decided to award the staging of the 2023 Uefa Champions League final to the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul,' read a statement from Uefa.

The European governing body has also announced that the Europa League final will be held in Dublin in 2024 and Bilbao in 2025. Bilbao has also been awarded the 2024 Women’s Champions League final. Both cities were due to host Euro 2020 matches prior to the pandemic.

The statement added: 'Following the withdrawal of hosting rights for Uefa Euro 2020 from two of the original hosts cities, the Uefa executive committee today approved a settlement agreement which includes the staging of future club competition finals, recognising the efforts and financial investment put [in] by the two cities in preparing for the tournament.'

The country has lost the European showpiece to Portugal two years running now due to the coronavirus pandemic

Turkey's Minister of Youth and Sports Mehmet Kasapoglu has confirmed his country is set to be awarded the 2023 Champions League final and the 2021 Super Cup.

Istanbul was set to host this year's Champions League final but the match was moved to Porto, Portugal due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

It was the second straight season that the pandemic has forced the Champions League final to be moved to Portugal from Turkey, with UEFA now set to compensate the latter country for its losses.

What was said?

"We had completed all our preparations for this competition and made our plans. We would like a final with enthusiastic fans in the stands, but it was not possible under pandemic conditions," Kasapoglu told Goal Turkey.

"Ataturk Olympic Stadium hosted an unforgettable final in 2005. It could do so again. However, there may be a need to revise some of your plans during the pandemic.

"We waive our rights this year. But we brought two great competitions to our country. We will host the UEFA Super Cup this year and the Champions League final in 2023."

Where were the finals set to be held?

The 2021 Super Cup final, which will feature the winner of the Champions League final – either Chelsea or Manchester City – against Villarreal, the Europa League champions, was originally set for Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Saint Petersburg is set to host the 2022 Champions League final, while Munich was scheduled to host the 2023 final.

But UEFA is now set to push Munich's hosting duties back as Istanbul moves ahead of the German city in the queue.
