I downloaded Windows Server 2012 R2 180 day evaluation, and I installed it but it's showing the license has expired.  I'm pretty sure the trial key comes with the ISO, so I don't understand why it's showing expired.  Has anybody had this issue? This is the first time I've downloaded and installed the OS.

  • Usually they either give you the key on the download page or email it to you later. I've never seen an eval come pre-licensed (officially at least).

On the TechNet website it states:

All evaluation versions are fully functional during the evaluation period, although booting to Safe mode is not available. The Windows Server 2012 Standard and Windows Server 2012 Datacenter editions come with the activation key pre-installed. After the 180-day evaluation period elapses, the server warns you in various ways depending on the edition.

  • You can try resetting the grace period but I would download a new eval.

You need to activate it in 10 days (no serial code is required), then the trial period of 180 days begins

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj574204.aspxOpens a new window (it is for 2012 but it is the same)

For all editions, you have 10 days to complete online activation, at which point the evaluation period begins and runs for 180 days. During the evaluation period, a notification on the Desktop displays the days remaining the evaluation period (except in Windows Server 2012 Essentials). You can also run slmgr.vbs /dlv from an elevated command prompt to see the time remaining.

To get 180 day trail, select Activate Software. Do not enter an activation key unless you really have one and select Next. Windows will then verify over the internet and come back stating clearly that you have 180 days.

I'd have to disagree with you Corrado.  When you select Active Software, it simply prompts you to enter a key.  No other option is available.

And in regards to the 10 day period also doesn't make sense, as the server shuts down after 1 or 2hrs when it's expired.  As I kept researching the issue, when I returned to the server it was power off.

I've also come to find out, the server has to be able to get online.  I hadn't connected it to the Internet yet, and was under the impression it would still state 180 day trial.  Once I entered the DNS, the server activated on its own. All good to go now.  No user interaction is needed to activate the 180 day trial.

I've done multiple times with Windows 2008 R2 trial; I don't know if 2012 R2 is changed or the server activated on its own (with 2008 R2 it was necessary to do this operation manually)

When it asks for a serial code it was possible simply to press "next" and the activation of trial period was done; as you say it is necessary to be able to get online as the activation is done online

That is true, it has changed with Server 2012 R2.  I remember the process in Server 2008 R2.  I was so confused when I saw it, and frustrated!  New things to learn in 2012, and it looks like plenty more to come.

Cheers Corrado! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I downloaded the iso file from below link and installed the OS, but it is showing as trial version expired and when I click to activate then it is asking for product key.

But I didn't get any product key to activate the trail version.

    Any suggestions?

Did you just download it or was that something you downloaded previously?  It seems the expiration date is set from when it was downloaded, not from when installed if you downloaded it a while back.

  • Open Command prompt as Administrator.

Type the following command “slmgr.vbs /rearm”

which reset the licensing status of machine and press enter.

Restart your server then you will found the evaluation period expired to 180 day.

    Enjoy :)
