Adidas supernova glide boost 7 review

I’m a big fan of Adidas’s Boost TPU midsoles, when I can find them in a shoe that fits my wide feet. Boost shoes are expensive, but the Boost material provides durable cushioning that holds up well in cold weather. I tend to go through shoes quickly, so the enhanced durability makes the extra cost worthwhile.

The Adidas Supernova Glide Boost is Adidas’ long-running (ha!) neutral trainer line, updated to make use of the Boost material. I was running in the full-Boost-midsole Energy Boost when I found a pair of Supernova Glide Boost 7’s at half-price. They fit my feet better than the Energy Boost, so I gave them a try.

The Supernova Glide Boost is similar to the Energy Boost. Both shoes are neutral trainers with a moderate 9-10mm drop from heel to toe. They have more forefoot cushion than a racing shoe, but not so much as to become mushy and lose road feel. The Supernova Glide adds a slab of EVA in the heel that makes the shoe a little more stable, at the cost of some cushioning and a little additional weight.

Adidas just came out with the Supernova Glide Boost 8. It differs only slightly from the Supernova Glide Boost 7. In the picture below, the Supernova Glide 8 is on the top.

The heel cup on the 8 extends higher on the achilles tendon than it does on the 7, but the extra material is flexible and shaped so that it’s not annoying. The three stripes on the 8 are reflective, a nice touch. The shape of the toebox has changed some. The outer mesh and interior upper material are similar.

Unfortunately (for me), the Supernova Glide 8 fits tighter than the Supernova Glide 7. It’s slightly narrower all along the shoe (the 7 is on the left):

The upper on the Supernova Glide 8 also seems less roomy. This puts the shoe more in line with the rest of the Adidas line, which can get a bit too tight for my taste.

On the other hand, while I can’t be certain, my impression is that the midsole EVA slab in the heel of the Supernova Glide 8 is less stiff, making the ride slightly softer. For me, that is a good thing.

Overall, the changes are moderate enough that most people who like the Supernova Glide Boost 7 will probably like the 8. It remains a good, basic shoe (except for the price) that’s protective enough for most people without being overwhelmingly soft. Now if it only came in widths…

It’s fair to say I smashed myself up; I cracked my left tibia and fibula in half and they burst out through the skin; I broke my arm; I fractured my pelvis. This was in October 2013 and as I write this, some two years on, I’m recovering from surgery in July to remove some locking screws and to revise the skin graft.

I’ve been able to get back in the gym, but I didn’t want to be wearing my trail running shoes so I picked out a pair of trainers that I thought might be the most comfortable to wear considering the pain of a failed skin graft and the discomfort of an incision in my ankle from where they removed a screw.

You’ll also see the word ‘boost’ on the side. This means that the foam used in the mid-sole has energy-returning properties. To you and it feels like you have a real spring in your step.

The red section is the torsion bar and the black is the Continental tyre rubber

A few years ago I wrote about how adidas was using Continental tyre rubber on their trail running trainers and this partnership has continued. If you look at the underside of the Supernova Glide 7 you will see red plastic torsion bars in the middle and then there is black rubber fore and aft of these bars which is actually the same kind of rubber used in car and motorcycle tyres. If you look really closely you can see the Continental logo embossed into the rubber. I’ve ran in these on the treadmill and on pavements but get these on wet grass and you’ll be surprised at just how grippy they are. And for me, wary of slipping over and hurting myself, they’ve given me that confidence to go out in the local park on a dew-covered early morning.

VERDICT

"A supportive yet light pair of trainers that energises your runs and gives you confidence. My only criticism is that I am usually a size 10, but these in a size 10 are just ever so tight around my toes, so next time I'd go for a half size up."

Are Supernova Cushion 7 good for running?

Back in all of their original glory, these adidas shoes are a one-to-one reissue of a famed archival runner from the 2000s. And while these trainers are in no way meant for running anymore, they still keep that same comfort from before that's necessary for all your daily moves.

What replaced adidas Supernova Glide?

The Solar Glide is rather a replacement for the softer Supernova we reviewed last year. In other words, the heel is softly cushioned with the overall midsole and outsole design following a similar template. The upper fit is an improvement. There's more space inside the forefoot and the toe-box.

Is adidas Supernova a running shoe?

adidas Supernova Conclusion Thomas: The Supernova is a solid choice for the runner looking for a durable trainer with loads of cushioning. I would recommend the shoe for heavier runners looking for a shoe that will provide lots of soft landings and plush miles.

Are adidas Supernova good for wide feet?

Like with the adidas energy boost and almost all of the adidas line, adidas Supernova fit narrow. The adidas Supernova is seamless so if you have wider feet (like myself), then it will stretch to fit your foot. However, the adidas Supernova toe box does run narrow. In most models of shoes, I wear a 10 wide.
