To take one last crack at it, your CNC devices have RJ-45 connectors/cables, so they have internal network cards. Those cards would be configured with an address, or to pick one up automatically. The only change is that you would set up whatever WiFi 'box' you'll use with an address that will work with your network, and then plug the CNC device into it. However, having it connected to a computer, using a separate address scheme, meant that if such a virus got on my network, it would never have even known the controller was there...
