Best-selling games of all time Elden Ring

Elden Ring is now topping the new NPD sales charts. Unsurprisingly, the game has now been beating Call of Duty as the most-bought game of the past 12 months.

Mat Piscatella, NPD Executive Director, has shared on the latest reports on Twitter, and said that Elden Ring has repeatedly been the best-selling game of the month, and that the game is also still considered the best-selling game of 2022.

Elden Ring has also been placing first in terms of dollar sales in four of its first five months in the market. It is also now ranked among the top 10 best-selling games in dollar sales ever in the United States.

While Elden Ring is currently the best-selling game of 2022, the game still has five more months of fierce competition.

Two games, in particular, could potentially take the number one spot as the best-selling game of 2022. These games are God of War Ragnarok which is coming out on November 9, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 which is coming out on October 28.

If you still haven’t played Elden Ring, you might want to change that ASAP! Check out our review to see why it got an impressive 10/10 from us, and where our reviewer Sean Mesler said,”Miyazaki and FromSoftware have crafted something so massive, special, wondrous and triumphant that it’s unfathomable how they can top it. Easily FromSoftware’s best game to date and a genuine masterpiece.”

FromSoftware’s latest shows little sign of slowing down

[Update: The NPD Group has issued an update, retracting the statement that Elden Ring is one of the all-time top 10 best-selling premium games in the U.S. market.

“Because the ranked charts do not include the full history for all titles and all platforms—across both physical and digital sales—this note was worded too definitively for what is an incomplete comparable universe,” wrote NPD’s Mat Piscatella on Twitter. “I apologize for the lack of clarity on the note.” Elden Ring has, however, still been the best-selling game for four of its five months on the market.

We’ve since updated the headline. Our original story follows below.]

Elden Ring continues to move copies, and has now hit a new sales milestone. The NPD Group reports that Elden Ring is now among the best-selling premium games of all time in the U.S., in terms of dollar sales.

NPD’s report for June included sales updates on many games, though Elden Ring retained the top spot. It’s placed first in dollar sales in four of the last five months it’s been on the market, and remains the best-selling game of 2022.

According to NPD’s numbers, Elden Ring now also ranks among the top 10 best-selling premium games in the U.S. of all time, in dollar sales.

Premium games, NPD’s Mat Piscatella elaborates, are defined as games with an upfront price tag and exclude DLC, microtransactions, and recurrent post-launch purchases. “Premium includes whatever upfront price a player must pay before being able to play the game,” Piscatella says. Piscatella predicted in a recent blog that Elden Ring will be 2022’s best-selling premium game in the U.S.

This year’s Call of Duty may still be able to give Elden Ring a challenge, but right now Elden Ring is leader of the pack for 2022 sales. It’s received nigh-on universal praise and seems like a presumptive favorite for this year’s GOTY talks, too. Seems like the sales will just keep on rolling in.

June in terms of other games

For other games, June 2022 was an interesting month. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga came in second for dollar sales, while Mario Strikers: Battle League closed in at third with its launch.

Interestingly enough, Overwatch popped back onto the top 20 at fifth overall. This is the first time it’s top-20 charted since October 2019, likely due to the Overwatch 2 Beta. Sunbreak also pushed Monster Hunter Rise back into the top 20, landing it a spot at number 13.

The NPD Group has also revealed the best-selling games of June 2022 and 2022 year-to-date.

Update 7/15/2022 12:33pm PT: The NPD Group has reached out to issue a retraction of its prior statement that Elden Ring was one of the top 10 best-selling premium games in US history.

Per the NPD Group, the original statement in its report was based on an "incomplete data set," which analyst Mat Piscatella elaborated on Twitter as not including the full history for all titles and platforms across physical and digital. As such, the group does not have enough information to conclude that it is indeed among the best-selling games.

However, Elden Ring remains the best-selling game for the month of June, and has been the best-selling game for four of its first five months on the market.

Original story:

According to The NPD Group, Elden Ring was not only the best-selling game of June 2022 and the first half of this year, but it has also become one of the top 10 best-selling premium games in terms of dollar sales in U.S. history.

The news was shared by The NPD Group's Mat Piscatella and, while it wasn't revealed where it places on that list, he did confirm more impressive facts for FromSoftware's latest game.

Alongside placing first in dollar sales in four of its first five months on the market, it is also the best-selling game in the past 12 months, even surpassing Call of Duty: Vanguard.

The last time Bandai Namco revealed sales figures for Elden Ring was in May 2022, saying that the game sold 13.4 million copies in its first month on sale.

Piscatella revealed much more about video game sales in June and the first half of the year, including that "PlayStation 5 generated the highest dollar sales amongst video game hardware platforms in both June and the first half of the calendar 2022, while Switch led both time periods in unit sales."

Overwatch impressed this month by placing 5th overall, marking its first return to the top 20 best-selling titles chart since October 2019. This jump is surely in part linked to the release of the Overwatch 2 Beta.

Final Fantasy VII Remake also impressed by becoming the 9th best-selling game in June 2022 after placing 159th in May. The announcement of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (FF7 Remake Part 2) undoubtedly played a big part in its success. The last time FF7 Remake appeared in the top 20 best-selling games was May 2020.

The release of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak brought the sales of the base game high enough to place 13th, and the Switch launch of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Hinokami Chronicles allowed the title to place 14th.
