When can I buy a 2023 Mustang?

UPDATE: Ford unveiled the all-new seventh-generation Mustang at the Mustang Stampede in Detroit on Sept. 14. Check out information about the new Mustang here.

Believe it or not, Ford debuted the sixth-generation Mustang all the way back in December 2013. The all-new seventh-generation Mustang — reportedly codenamed S650 — should be arriving very soon.

Ford has the Mustang Mach-E now, which offers a Mustang-branded car that is far more efficient, more practical and has all-wheel drive. That should free up the conventional Mustang to remain very much a good old-fashioned Mustang, at least for the current generation.

Here’s what we know so far about the future of Ford's iconic pony car.

We will meet the new Ford Mustang on September 14

Here's what may be the face of the new Ford Mustang

The new Mustang should carry over the current V8 and EcoBoost four

Ford should keep the combustion engine lineup intact, at least initially. According to a recent report from Ford Authority citing exclusive sources, the new Mustang will launch with the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four and 5.0-liter V8 found in the current 2022 model cars. Those engines should get the same 10-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions options found today.

Here's what the new seventh-generation Mustang will sound like

Ford provided a 16-second video teasing what the engine for the new seventh-generation Mustang will sound like. Enthusiasts will notice (and heartily approve of) its similarity to the outgoing Mustang GT with the 5.0-liter V8.

The Mustang is probably not getting a hybrid or AWD

An electric Mustang will likely arrive down the road (but not for a while)

The seventh-generation Mustang life cycle should stretch into the early 2030s. It’s really hard to see Ford launching a new pure combustion Mustang at that point. One report has Ford launching an all-electric Mustang for 2028, which would overlap with the S650 — and eventually replace it. There's no confirmation of that timeline yet, but it would make a lot of sense.

Are they discontinuing Mustangs in 2023?

There are a couple of catches, though: Ford will cut the 2023 model year short to make way for the seventh-gen 'Stang, and the Shelby GT500 will be discontinued for 2023. Ford spokesman Mike Levine confirmed the lineup changes to Motor Authority. The Mach 1 will be the range-topping Mustang model for 2023.

How much will the 2023 Ford Mustang cost?

We expect the base price of the 2023 Ford Mustang in fastback/coupe format will start at around $28,000. This nets you the turbo 4-cylinder and a choice of 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic. If you want open-air Mustang thrills, the entry-level 2023 Mustang convertible may run about $33,000.
