Star Topology A star may be a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) during which all nodes are individually connected to a central connection point, sort of a hub or a switch. A star takes more cable than e.g. a bus, but the benefit is that if a cable fails, just one node is going to be brought down. Each device within the network is connected to a central device called a hub. If one device wants to send data to another device, it’s to first send the info to the hub then the hub transmits that data to the designated device. The number of links required to connect nodes in the star topology is N where N is the number of nodes.

Which of the following statements is true about the star topology

    Advantages of Star Topology

    • It is very reliable – if one cable or device fails then all the others will still work
    • It is high-performing as no data collisions can occur
    • Less expensive because each device only need one I/O port and wishes to be connected with hub with one link.
    • Easier to put in
    • Robust in nature
    • Easy fault detection because the link are often easily identified.
    • No disruptions to the network when connecting or removing devices.
    • Each device requires just one port i.e. to attach to the hub.
    • If N devices are connected to every other in star, then the amount of cables required to attach them is N. So, it’s easy to line up.

    Disadvantages of Star Topology

    • Requires more cable than a linear bus .
    • If the connecting network device (network switch) fails, nodes attached are disabled and can’t participate in network communication.
    • More expensive than linear bus topology due to the value of the connecting devices (network switches)
    • If hub goes down everything goes down, none of the devices can work without hub.
    • Hub requires more resources and regular maintenance because it’s the central system of star .
    • Extra hardware is required (hubs or switches) which adds to cost
    • Performance is predicated on the one concentrator i.e. hub.

    What Does Star Topology Mean?

Star topology is a network topology in which each network component is physically connected to a central node such as a router, hub or switch.

In a star topology, the central hub acts like a server and the connecting nodes act like clients. When the central node receives a packet from a connecting node, it can pass the packet on to other nodes in the network. A star topology is also known as a star network.

    Techopedia Explains Star Topology

Star networks require a point-to-point connection between the central node and connecting devices. To improve communication between the devices on the network, the central node can provide signal reconditioning and amplification services.

Star topologies are often used in home networks. The benefits of a star network topology include the following:

    • Limits the impact of a single point of failure. In star networks, each connecting node is isolated from other connecting nodes. If one connecting node goes down, it will not impact the performance of other connecting nodes in the network.
    • Facilitates adding or removing individual components to and from a network. Star networks are usually kept small because network performance can suffer when too many devices compete for access to the central node.

This article lists 100 Star Topology MCQs for engineering students. All the Star Topology Questions and  Answers given below include a hint and a link wherever possible to the relevant topic. This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams, interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up their fundamentals on Star Topology.

Digital communication deals with both wired and wireless networks using various networking devices such as Hubs, routers, Ethernet cables, and more. These devices are arranged in such a manner depending upon the topology and other consideration parameters.

A wireless communication network can be designed flexibly depending on different network topologies available such as Star, Tree & Mesh topologies. A star topology also known as communication topology is a LAN network that connects each node in the network to a centralized hub.

The main components involved in this star topology namely host, hub, and transmission lines. A hub on this network collects the data from the sender and distributes the same to other components on the network.  Hence the hub component acts as a controller of the network.

They benefit in terms of low latency between the hub and remote nodes. But lacks in terms of connection where if any one of the nodes gets disturbed or goes down the entire nodes on the same network gets disturbed. A star topology is mainly deployed in areas such as corporate offices, schools, and homes.

Which best describes as star topology?

Star topology is a network topology in which each network component is physically connected to a central node such as a router, hub or switch. In a star topology, the central hub acts like a server and the connecting nodes act like clients.

What is a star in topology?

Star Topology A star may be a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) during which all nodes are individually connected to a central connection point, sort of a hub or a switch. A star takes more cable than e.g. a bus, but the benefit is that if a cable fails, just one node is going to be brought down.

    What is star topology examples?

There are a lot of examples of star topology in real life also, and you can see Star Network Topology Examples in Airports, Hospitals, Banks, and Educational Institutes. A Switch can also be utilised as a central device instead of a Hub.
